I just came back from Sportel (more about it in my blog ) which is the yearly conference for buying sport TV rights and so a very interesting view of the same questions. Sport is one of the biggest drivers of TV audiences. The major sports and sport federations (who own the rights for broadcasting the sport events) don’t know what to do with the net and the new ability of the platform to show TV. They know a tidal wave is coming but don’t have the tools or the know how to take the lead and change it. The exception to the rule is motor sports that are very advanced technologically and are finding new business models to take advantage of the changes in TV. The long tail is already happening and will be an even more important force then ever before. The keys to success will be creating a better user experience leave the platform to the Microsoft/ Google / Intel of the world. Copyright’s are back, just look at what is going on at You Tube over the past week.
